FMP - Work in Progress

FMP so far....

For my Final Major Project I am looking into legibility. I want to design a typeface on the right cusp of legibility

Winchester Logo

This logo was based on the tile patterns on the floor of Winchester Cathedral

D&AD

This was my D&AD entry this year

I chose to do the Metro Live Brief

Fashion Show Brief

The theme was ‘eccentric heritage’. I wanted to play on the monarchy because I thought it is an import part of British heritage. I looked at Alice in Wonderland and that’s where I got the idea for the playing cards. I also wanted to play on the fact that British people are very refined and I think that is represented in the royal family. I also looked into the 1980’s punk seen where people were rebelling against a ‘Thatcher Britain’. The playing cards are very structured and the faces on the character are very refined but by altering the looks by putting in colour and changing things around it breaks that structure down.

Manifesto

For this project I had to look deep into who I was as a designer. I found out a lot about myself in this project; that I crave structure and rules as starting blocks in my work. This gives my work order and a uniformity. I came across a great quote during my research, 'create structure, then destroy it!'

Each poster is made up of a different shape because I often use basic shapes as starting points in anything I make from type to illustration. The quote encapsulates the idea that you should always try to think a little harder to come up with an original idea.

I called it : Simplify, Stick to the Rules and Create Type

Bar Poster Design

These are a couple posters I've done in my time while working in my student bar.

I love the idea of replacing words with images...this is something I played around with...one day I hope to translate a whole piece of text like this...may be impossible though, but we live and hope!

Ghost Letters - Work in Progress

Something I've been playing around with by photographing my illuminated keyboard letters with a low res camera.

Fat fRed Typeface

I created this font for my 2nd year Self Initiated project. I set myself a brief where I had to use strict rules when making a typeface
. This typeface is made up only of two shapes; a rectangle with curved ends and a circle.

I have since given Fat fRed a face using the same shapes and techniques created for the typeface. He comes in the form of this gloomy over weight red bear!

Well I'm finally here to fill all your Cuppy and Pasting needs!!!

I am a 3rd year Graphic Arts student studying at the Winchester School of Art and in one month's time I'll be released into the big bad world! So be nice, have a look around and get in contact if you spy anything you like...Email : tcuppage@gmail.com

Peace

Rusty Old Boat

This was my Genius Loci project from my 2nd year. It's based on the rivers around Southampton. I was inspired when at low tide it revealed neglected decaying old boats stuck in the mud.

The brief was to to create something that encapsulates the essence of a place. Naturally I chose to do type design!

The curves of the letters are made to resemble boat hulls.
